Welcome to Annie’s Weaving Room
The apartment is a recent conversion to the old weaving room belonging to the Arts and Crafts designer Annie Garnet. The whole cottage dates from the mid 19th century at which time the right-hand half was the stable block for Fairfield house, which is adjacent to the cottage, and where the Garnet family lived. The left-hand extension was added by Ms Garnet around 1900 to extend her workshop and design studio.
There is more information about the spinning and weaving business ran by Annie Garnet at the The Museum of Lakeland Life in Kendal. This is owned by the Lakeland Arts trust, who have also published a booklet about the work Annie carried out, entitled Spinning the colours of Lakeland. There is a copy of the book in the apartment for your perusal, and the book can be purchased from the nearby Arts and Crafts house Blackwell, which is just 1 mile from the apartment.
